OK, my headline is a bit too general...
Did they falsify the data and manipulate it to make it say what it really doesn't? No.
Read THIS PDF Report by independent investigators.
They have four conclusions:
1) They saw no evidence of scientific malpractice.
2) They advise including real statisticians for analyzing the statistics
3) That certain governmental policies restricted access to the data, not the scientists
4) There are unresolved questions as to if the scientists could legally respond to the freedom of information requests and that it is more appropriate for the original collectors of the data to do so.
The report doesn't say there was nothing wrong - but rather that the scientists did not distort the data (at least not on purpose), and that there are many things left still unresolved.
The main point is that the impact to climate science is negligible. The world is getting warmer, and humans are a significant factor.
