Convert to Christianity: A Response

Occasionally the Belief Blog on CNN has an article that has a wider reach than to just the religious. The article on the humor of Jesus is one example. As usual a war of words erupted between the faithful and those daring atheists willing to wade into enemy territory (I exaggerate - it takes no courage in the anonymity of the internet to wade into enemy territory). Amongst the comments I found this ... nugget.

Convert to Christianity
Reasons why Atheism is TERRIBLE and unhealthy for our children and living things!

† Atheism makes you stupid, ignorant & blind.
† Atheism is a disease that needs to be treated.
† Atheists are mentally ill, that's why they have no faith.
† Atheism won't take you to kingdom of heaven and paradise.
† Atheism making you agree with Stalin, Mao & other terrible mass murder leaders.
† No traditional family lifestyle, boring and feeling 'outsider'
† Atheist try to convert people over internet because they feel "safer" behind closet.
† Atheists do not really exist, they just pretend that they don't believe in God and argue with religious people.
† Atheists have had terrible life experience, bad childhood and not being loved.
† Most Atheists are uneducated... No Atheists could run for presidency.
† Atheism brought upon the French Revolution, one of the most evil events of all of history.
† Atheism cannot explain the origins of the universe, therefore God exists.
† All atheists believe in evolution, which means they don't believe in morality and think we should all act like animals.
† The Bible says atheism is wrong, and the Bible is always right (see: Genesis 1:1, Psalms 14:1, Psalms 19:1, Romans 1:19-20)
† Atheism have no holidays, no culture, no nothing. Waste of living in this planet...

I've maintained as much of the formatting as reasonably possible. Now let me address the bullet-ed points (cute how Convert used little crosses, isn't it?).

† Atheism makes you stupid, ignorant & blind.

OK, a quick look at the record is enough to challenge this assertion. I'll admit it is easy to find stupid, ignorant and probably blind atheists, but there are a mind bogglingly large assortment of atheists that fit none of these ad hominem attributes. Let me name just a few:

  • Carl Sagan
  • Isaac Asimov
  • Albert Camus
  • Noam Chomsky
  • Daniel Dennett
  • Jodie Foster
  • Katherine Hepburn

By all measures intelligent, educated and visionary people.

† Atheism is a disease that needs to be treated.

This is absurd! What?

Let me search the internet for medical treatments for Atheism. Hmmm, nothing useful, no diagnosis indicators for atheism. I guess maybe Convert is wrong on this point. Entirely.

† Atheists are mentally ill, that's why they have no faith.

Convert is repeating themselves here. I leave you with the same thought. Convert is wrong. Entirely.

† Atheism won't take you to kingdom of heaven and paradise.

I have news for Convert. Christianity won't get you to heaven and paradise either. Before such a trip is possible the destination must first exist. At present there is not now or has there ever been any evidence such a place exists outside the imagination of humans.

† Atheism making you agree with Stalin, Mao & other terrible mass murder leaders.

If Hitler was quoted as saying the "sky is blue" would you argue it isn't? This reminds me of the broken clock joke. Even a stopped clock is correct twice a day. Perhaps we should recall the Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, or many of the current Honor Killings still practiced today and say that they too believe in God so you must be agreeing with them.

† No traditional family lifestyle, boring and feeling 'outsider'

Studies have shown (left as an effort for the reader to look up if you want the proof - I'm not doing your homework for you) that atheists live in loving, committed families at an incidence equal to the religious and slightly better than the deeply religious.

If you don't like his writing, you might argue Isaac Asimov was boring. I seriously doubt he considered himself such. Carl Sagan was anything but. Jodie Foster is an actress that I am happy to watch in any movies she's been in - not boring.

I could, but won't, go into the philandering famous Christians (so much for family values). Any of the religious that are boring I have already forgotten about so finding examples is more work than is worth doing, but I am confident they exist; they are humans too, after all, and cover the same gamut of personalities. Your "Feeling 'outsider'" comment needs expansion - what do you mean? Feeling isolated a lot? Isn't that called being human? It turns out that most people, religious or otherwise go through a phase of feeling like an outsider. It isn't an "Atheist Thing."

† Atheist try to convert people over internet because they feel "safer" behind closet.

Says the anonymous Convert.

I don't want to convert anyone. I would appreciate if you would stop trying to convert me (you, perhaps, aren't projecting your own tactics are you?)

† Atheists do not really exist, they just pretend that they don't believe in God and argue with religious people.

Bull Crap. I suspect this is projection and that the argument comes from a lack of real faith and a need to "prove" that you do believe after all and are unwilling to admit otherwise. I don't pretend to not believe in God. That would be silly. If I really did believe in God I would go to church and all those other religious activities the religious do. I don't.

† Atheists have had terrible life experience, bad childhood and not being loved.

I've been loved my entire life, have had a normal and essentially non-traumatic childhood and no terrible life experiences. Such a comment is absurd given the number of deeply religious people who have lived such painful lives and are still religious.

† Most Atheists are uneducated... No Atheists could run for presidency.

Most of the names listed in my famous atheists list above were very highly educated. Jodie Foster has at least completed a Bachelor's degree magna cum laude. So uneducated is demonstrably untrue, at least as a blanket statement.

The second portion is a complete non sequitur. It is true though, right now. No acknowledged atheist could garner sufficient votes to win the Presidency. That isn't to say we haven't had atheist Presidents - but we probably haven't (just as there has never been a Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim or Hindu).

It is a political reality of our day that atheists are reviled so. That doesn't make the atheist wrong (or right).

† Atheism brought upon the French Revolution, one of the most evil events of all of history.

What? The tyranny of the monarchy brought on the French Revolution! I don't claim it is an infallible source, but here is a comment from the Wiki for the French Revolution:

Old ideas about tradition and hierarchy - of monarchy, aristocracy and religious authority - were abruptly overthrown by new Enlightenment principles of equality, citizenship and inalienable rights.

† Atheism cannot explain the origins of the universe, therefore God exists.

Since when does a lack of belief in Gods need to explain anything. Not collecting stamps doesn't buy dinner, either.

† All atheists believe in evolution, which means they don't believe in morality and think we should all act like animals.

Since when does a belief in evolution coincide with a lack of morality? The Catholic Church believes in evolution (hmm, maybe there is a point there... just kidding). That we have evolved along with all other life on this planet is not a reason to believe we must act like all other life on this planet. It does explain why we often do, however. We are thinking and conscious and intelligent animals. We should behave as such. Developing a moral code is part of developing a society. It is part and parcel of being human today. Being an atheist does not mean one is amoral also. Many Christians have been amoral - I don't project that they all are!

† The Bible says atheism is wrong, and the Bible is always right (see: Genesis 1:1, Psalms 14:1, Psalms 19:1, Romans 1:19-20)

Nice. I'm right because I tell you I'm right. Very nice. See the fallacy there? If not I refer you to the beginning of this sentence where it should be abundantly clear what the fallacy is. ;-)

† Atheism have no holidays, no culture, no nothing. Waste of living in this planet...

What is the point of this comment? Atheists have no holy days.... Duh! Nothing is holy if there is nothing Holy to decree it so. But the rest of the comments are so far wrong they've wrapped in on themselves and are in danger of imploding from the stupid.

No culture? Do non-stamp collectors have a culture? Do people that do not listen to opera have a culture? What the heck? The only thing you can rightly claim that atheists agree on is a lack of faith in divinity. Otherwise they belong to the culture they grew up in - very often Jewish or Christian in the United States and possibly other cultures elsewhere.

No nothing? The only nothing is regarding divinity. The famous epithet hurled at atheists is Materialists. Check it out. That is the opposite of nothing. Waste of living in this planet? This is the one time we get. Living on this planet is everything, all we get. Do not waste it you mongrel! Don't destroy the one good place we have, alright? Atheists might not believe there is a purpose driving all our lives, but that doesn't mean that life is pointless. Life is the point.

Now, several of Convert's comments lead me to believe Convert is a Poe. Whatever. I answered the points regardless.
